Carlos Morelli

Director · Screenwriter · Film Editor

Uruguayan filmmaker working in Latin America and Germany, based in Berlin since 2009 through the DAAD Berlin Artists Programme. His work spans three features, television, documentary and short films, with screenings at Busan and Shanghai and distribution by HBO.

Trained as a violinist, he develops stories through screenwriting, directing and editing, treating the cut as another stage of writing. His films explore the distance between who people are and who they are trying to be. He is Professor of Screenwriting and Directing at SRH University Berlin and a story-development mentor at the DFFB, alongside developing new films and series across countries.

Screenplay and direction · Two episodes

Eight stories set in the same Montevideo Airbnb apartment — each episode a different writer, a different genre, a different world. Morelli contributed as writer and director on two episodes. Produced at Teatro El Galpón, Montevideo’s historic independent theatre company, founded in 1949, whose stage was converted into a full TV set. Created by Esther Feldman (Okupas, En Terapia), with artistic coordination by José Miguel Onaindia and general direction by Guillermo Casanova.

Cut for the boy’s point of view: fast, physical football sequences contrast with quieter, held moments in the family scenes, so the gap between the two worlds becomes the drama.

Ideas become synopses, treatments and screenplays, then scenes to rehearse, shoot and discuss.

Morelli teaches through the development and revision of students’ own work. Feedback starts with what each project is trying to achieve, identifies the main obstacle and gives the student a clear direction for the next draft.

Working with actors

Morelli trains directors to turn intentions into playable actions, test choices in rehearsal and recognise what changes a scene. Students learn to give useful feedback to others and decide for themselves which notes to keep.

AI-assisted screenwriting

In his AI-assisted screenwriting courses, Morelli has students use AI to research a story, test structure, explore alternatives and examine revisions — then measure the results against their own intentions, question generic or misleading suggestions and decide what serves the project. Authorship, bias, source checking and confidential material are part of the work. The writer remains responsible for every decision and for the final work.

Carlos Morelli came to cinema sideways. First he was a violinist — trained at the Simón Bolívar conservatory in Venezuela, first violin in youth orchestras across Uruguay and Argentina. In 1999, a screenwriting course changed the direction entirely. He completed a BA in Audiovisual Production at Universidad ORT Uruguay, then a Master's in Feature Film Screenwriting at ESCAC in Barcelona (2004).

His early short films reached international festivals. Alguien debe morir (2002) screened in Official Competition at Rotterdam. Breve historia de cómo se conocieron... screened at Rotterdam, Leeds, and Tampere — and began a consistent pattern: comedies that open onto something more uncomfortable, dramas with a lightness that keeps them from collapse. In 2004, the Berlinale Talent Campus. In 2005, Artist-in-Residence at the Modern Art Museum of Shanghai.

From 2005 to 2009 he taught dramaturgy at the University of Guadalajara. In 2009, the DAAD Berlin Artists Programme brought him to Germany — and he stayed. The short film Warisover, made during that residency, won the ARTE Short Film Award at the International Short Film Festival Hamburg.

Mi Mundial (2017) was his feature debut — the most-watched Uruguayan film. Der Geburtstag (2019) followed: a black-and-white film noir made for ZDF. Instinto, co-directed with Andrés Varela, is his third feature. He co-edited Mi Mundial and edited Instinto.

He has worked as writer-director on two episodes of Temporario (Canal 10 Uruguay, created by Esther Feldman). He is Professor of Screenwriting and Directing at SRH University in Berlin and a story-development mentor at the DFFB, and has taught across Spain, Mexico, Chile, China and Uruguay.
